100 Years of Poppies
at the New Hall, Chigwell School, High Road, Chigwell, IG7 6QQ

In commemoration of the outbreak of The Great War, music included Sir Arthur Sullivan's Boer War Te Deum, songs by Mendelssohn and Vaughan Williams, and WWI songs.

The prize winner of our Composition Competition by a young composer was Chris Hutchings for his composition 'Next Morning'. This was performed by the choir and Chris received his well earned prize from Judith Bingham.

We are very grateful to The Imperial War Museum for permission to use the poem which inspired Chris's work.

Watch this space for furher details and photos.

Children from Theydon Bois Primary School sang 'Tommy', written to commemorate the fallen soldiers of World War I. This moving performance can be seen and heard on U-Tube.

Tommy marched along our street
A big crowd turned out to greet
Proud and scared to go and fight,
But did not know what he would meet.
Tommy we remember you.
Tommy boarded ship for France
A huge wave hit his lance
And horses screamed to get on land
But you and they got only sand
Tommy we remember you.
Tommy dug a long deep trench
He could hardly bear the stench
Of mud and fire and cruel death.
Tommy fell where poppies grew....
Tommy we remember you.
